Translation 5 Symposium
Das Translation 5 Symposium fand im November 2016 statt und stellte aktuelle Positionen im Type und Corporate Design in Zusammenhang mit der berühmten deutschen Sans Serif dar. Gleichzeitig werden aber auch kritische Positionen und neue Forschungsergebnisse vorgestellt. Zum Symposium erscheint „Tribute to Paul“. Im Vorgriff auf den 90. Geburts- tag der berühmten Schrift 2017, haben wir eine persönliche Auswahl international bekannter Designerinnen und Designer gebeten, uns ein visuelles Statement zu gestalten. Gleichzeitig wurde eine Ausstellung organisiert. Die Ausstellung zeigt eine thematische Auswahl von Arbeiten der Lehreinheit Kommunikationsdesign der Hochschule Mainz. Darunter sind Publikationen, Plakate und interaktive Installationen, die sich inhaltlich und gestalterisch mit Paul Renner und der Futura auseinandersetzen, sowie Experimente und Prototypen, die in Auseinandersetzung mit dem Medium Buch neue Formate erproben.
The Translations 5 Symposium entitled FUTURA – TRIBUTE TO A TYPEFACE presents current positions in type and corporate design, with enthusiastic references to the famous geometrical Sanserif or inspired by it. We will, however, also introduce and discuss critical points of view, as well as new design-historic research findings about its origin and initial reception. Accompanying the symposium there will be the limited edition TRIBUTE TO PAUL, a magazine with visual statements by contemporary designers for the 90th birth- day of FUTURA. There is also an exhibition. The exhibition shows a topical selection
of work from the subject of Communication Design of the University of Applied Sciences, Mainz. We will show publications, posters and interactive installations which in content and design are dealing with Paul Renner and Futura. We will also show experiments and prototypes exploring and discussing new formats with the medium book in mind.
